How to Fix Weak Resume Bullets (Before/After Examples)
Most weak bullets share three failure modes: passive voice, no metrics, and vague verbs. Here's how to spot them and rewrite each.
A weak bullet doesn't tell the recruiter what you did. It tells them you were nearby when something happened. Three failure modes account for ~95% of weak bullets, and each has a specific fix.
Failure 1: Passive voice
Before: "Was responsible for the platform roadmap."
After: "Drove the platform roadmap across 4 engineering teams; shipped 9 of 11 committed Q-themes on schedule."
The fix: replace "was responsible for" with an active verb that names what you did. "Drove", "owned", "led", "shipped", "delivered". Then add scale (4 teams) and outcome (9 of 11 commits).
Failure 2: No metrics
Before: "Improved page load times."
After: "Cut p99 page load from 3.2s to 0.8s by lazy-loading hero images and deferring third-party scripts."
The fix: add a number. Percent, dollar, time, count, scale. If you don't have one, ask Slack or your old PR descriptions. The number isn't optional — it's what separates "did stuff" from "moved a metric".
Failure 3: Vague verbs
Before: "Worked on improving developer experience."
After: "Rebuilt the platform SDK and CLI; cut median integration time for new partners from 6 days to under 4 hours."
"Worked on", "involved in", "helped with", "supported" — these all signal "I was on the project but didn't drive it". Replace with the strongest accurate verb. If you didn't drive it, that's fine — find the part you did drive and write that bullet instead.
The Action + Verb + Metric formula
Every strong bullet follows the same shape: [Action verb] [specific thing] [quantified outcome] [optional method].
- "Negotiated (verb) a 3-year platform contract (thing) at 22% below the previous benchmark (metric)."
- "Architected (verb) the event-driven ingestion pipeline (thing) reducing p99 latency by 62% (metric)."
- "Mentored (verb) 4 mid-level PMs (thing); 2 promoted within 12 months (metric)."
Quick audit
Look at every bullet on your resume. Cross out any that don't have a strong verb in the first three words AND a number somewhere. That's the rewrite list. Run them through the AI resume fixer if you want machine-generated rewrite suggestions.
One last rule
Cut clichés. "Hard worker", "team player", "results-driven", "self-starter", "rockstar" — these are filler. Recruiters skip them and they consume bullet real estate that could be evidence.
